In lower tier runs, you can freely substitute this gem with Bane of the Powerful. When an effect reads that it increases your weapon damage or does damage by X of your weapon damage, that is meant to explicitly exclude thorns, and vice versa. Each time you hit an enemy with Punish, Slash, or block an attack your Thorns is increased by 90 for. Weapon damage and thorns damage are antonyms in Diablo 3.
Try an actual rift with your new config and see how your damage feels, rather than looking at your numbers. But yeah your sheet dps (and, by extension, weapon dps) doesnt matter at all.
